As of July 1, 2023, consumers must pay for single-use cups and containers containing plastic for takeaway

 

In short

 

This rule applies to customers of takeaway and delivery locations:

- Cups and food packaging (for direct consumption) that are fully or partly made of plastic (including coatings).
- Food containers/trays from which one meal can be consumed without further preparation.

Example:

A food container with, for example, nuts/cheese, etc. with more than 2 portions (120 grams) that will only be consumed at home may still be sold without the surcharge for single-use plastic.

Detailed information

Guidelines have been established for the surcharge. Apply €0.25 for a cup, €0.50 for a meal (which may consist of several containers), and €0.05 for packaging of prepacked vegetables, fruit, salads, and portion packs. Consumers must be clearly informed in advance that they are paying for a cup or container containing plastic. The sales price (including 21% VAT) must be shown at the shelf or on the menu. The money for these products remains with the entrepreneur.
